Iron is a trace mineral required for red blood cell formation and adequate formation of hemoglobin and myoglobin, proteins that carry oxygen in the blood and muscle tissue. Iron also participates in many vital biochemical pathways and enzyme systems, including immune system function.
An iron-poor diet can lead to iron deficiency anemia. Also, people can develop this type of anemia from an NSAID-related ulcer, or one caused by taking aspirin, ibuprofen, or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)over a long period of time.
If you have been diagnosed with iron deficiency, then these supplements may be indicated.
Keep iron supplements out of the reach of children. As few as five high-potency iron tablets can be fatal for a small child.
