Enlargement of the prostate gland occurs in 50% of men between the ages of 40 and 59 and in 80% of men over 70. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland in men that surrounds the urethra (urine emptying canal). As a sexual function it contributes a large part of the seminal fluid, (but not the semen itself) and during ejaculation prostate contractions help to catapult semen out of the urinary tube. The first sign of prostate enlargement is usually the need to urinate frequently during the night. (The enlargement squeezes or pinches the urinary tube). As the condition progresses, many men also notice a burning sensation during urination. There are notices in difficulty starting, hesitation and interruption of the slower-weaker urine stream that also contributes to after-dribbling. Research conducted at Harvard University found that men who ate 10 or more servings of tomato-based foods (which contain Lycopene) each week lowered their risks of prostate cancer by almost 45%.
